Windows 98 Shutdown Problems

Problems with the ini files

To determine if there is a conflict in the System.ini or the Win.ini file.

Start->Run->Msconfig

* On the General tab, click Selective startup.

* Click to clear all the check boxes under Selective startup.

* Click to select the Process System.ini file check box.

* Click to select the Process Win.ini file check box.

* Click OK.

* When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.

If your computer starts or shuts down correctly now, there is a problem with an entry in the System.ini or Win.ini file.

Examine the entries more closely to determine the exact cause of the problem. Once you determine which entry is causing the problem, remove the entry, disable the entry by placing a semicolon (;) in front of it, or modify the entry so that it no longer causes the problem.

Display Driver Problems

To determine whether your display adapter driver is compatible and working correctly:

Start->Run->MSconfig

ADVANCED -> VGA 640 x 480 x 16 check box -> OK

Restart the computer.

If the computer starts or shuts down correctly now, the display adapter may not be configured correctly or it may be damaged.

Old Version of Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer should be at version 6 or higher.

Run Windows Update to see if there is a newer version.

LM Announce is enabled with FILE AND PRINT SHARING:

1. START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> NETWORK

2. Select FILE AND PRINT SHARING FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS

3. Properties -> LM Announce set to No

4. Save -> exit and restart the computer.

Problems with Fast Shutdown

Fast Shutdown reduces shutdown time.  This is incompatible with many older hardware devices.

To disable fast shutdown:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

2. Click Advanced, select the Disable fast shutdown check box, click OK, and then click OK again.

3. Restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

4. Shut down the computer.

If the computer shuts down correctly after you disable fast shutdown, this feature may be incompatible with one or more hardware devices installed in your computer.

Bootlog.txt Lists Problems

Information in your Bootlog.txt file may help you pinpoint the cause of the shutdown problem.

Use any text editor, such as Notepad, to examine the Bootlog.txt file in the root folder of your hard disk for "Terminate=" entries. These entries, located at the end of the file, may provide clues to the cause of the problem.

For each "Terminate=" entry, find a matching "EndTerminate=" entry.

If the last line in the Bootlog.txt file is "EndTerminate=KERNEL," Windows shut down successfully.

If the last line in the Bootlog.txt file is shown in the following table, the problem may be due to the cause shown beside it.

Last line: Terminate: Query Drivers

Possible cause: Memory manager problem.

Last line: Terminate: Unload Network

Possible cause: Conflict with real-mode network driver in the Config.sys file.

Last line: Terminate: Reset Display

Possible cause: Video shadowing may need to be disabled. May also need an updated video driver.

Last line: Terminate: RIT

Possible cause: Timer-related problems with the sound card or an older mouse driver.

Last line: Terminate: Win32

Possible cause: Problem with a 32-bit program blocking a thread.

Problems With IRQ Steering

The IRQ streeing allows several PCI devices to share the same interrupt request (IRQ). If the BIOS is not fully compliant, this option may lead to machines not shutting down properly… even if 2 or more devices are not sharing an IRQ.

To disable PCI bus IRQ Steering:

1. START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM

2. On the Device Manager tab -> System Devices

3. PCI Bus -> CLEAR the Use IRQ Steering check box on the IRQ Steering tab

4. OK -> OK -> restart the computer

After you restart the computer, attempt to shut down the computer again.

Norton Anti-Virus Attempting to Scan a Floppy Disk On Shutdown

1. Open Norton Anti-Virus

2. NAV Options -> Auto Protect -> Advanced -> Floppy disk scan

3. Uncheck "Scan floppies for boot viruses when shutting down Windows".

Problems Going Into Suspend Mode

1. Insert the Windows 98 CD

2. START -> RUN -> D:\TOOLS\MSTUTIL\PMTSHOOT\PMTSHOOT.EXE (where D: is your CD-ROM drive)

Once installed, PMTShoot will run automatically when Windows starts. Then you can suspend your computer.

The problems, with the name of the device and/or the drivers that caused the suspend to fail, will be displayed in red.

After you have fixed the problem:

1. START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM

2. Select PMTSHOOT - POWER MANAGEMENT TROUBLE SHOOTER -> REMOVE

3. RESTART COMPUTER
